For more than 30 years, I’ve had the joy of helping dogs and the people who love them.
Over that time, I’ve worked with thousands of dogs — puppies just starting out, family dogs needing better obedience, and dogs whose behaviour had become genuinely difficult. Every dog is different, and every family has its own circumstances. The work has always been about understanding both.
Some clients came to me for a few weeks and moved on. Others stayed in touch, returned with another dog, and in some cases have been part of my life for decades.

Phobia of Stairs and a Failed Training Attempt
When I adopted my 3 year old retired racing greyhound he had never experienced stairs. I had to teach him how to go up them. He figured out how to go down them by himself – for about 6 months. Then winter came and the salt bins were moved beside door to go outside. Goblin perceived they were in his way. He stumbled and cut his hocks. From there, over 2 months period, it developed into a full out phobia of the stairs. It got so bad, my neighbour was carrying my 75 lb dog down the stairs. I hired a trainer from another company. I realized after one session that she didn’t have a clue of how to deal with his intense fear. If I didn’t find a solution fast, I would have to give up my dog. I was terrified and devastated. Then I contacted Nick. He was a God send. He worked with Goblin to help him get past his fear and regain his confidence. Then he did the same for me. Without his teaching, I would have had to give up my dog. I’m forever grateful for all he taught us both.

Everyone's Less Anxious Now

Special Needs Puppy Thriving
Nick is not only an amazing trainer, but is extremely attentive and considerate of you and your pets needs! Our situation was quite particular, as not only did my pup have issues with separation anxiety, but due to a birth issue, over the first few months of her life, she was required to have a few amputations. Needless to say, recovery is unpredictable, and Nick was not only so understanding throughout the ENTIRE way, but when he took her into his care, went ABOVE AND BEYOND.
As for the training, not only did my pup come back to me with a new set of skills to manage her anxiety, Nick made sure to take the time and provide me with the tools to maintain these changes! She has been doing amazingly since her return and I have no words to express just how much Nick has helped us both. I cannot recommend Family K9 Dog training more!

From Lunging, Barking and Growling To Control
If someone walked by too close, especially with a dog, he would lunge, bark, growl, and completely lose focus. It felt like I had no control in those moments and it was exhausting mentally.

Neighbourhood Triggers No Longer An Issue.
I’d just about given up all hope. Molly is a great dog, very loving, but highly leash reactive. I knew she had it in her to change, but I couldn’t get her there on my own. Walking her was stressful and I came to dread it, rather than look forward to it. She would lunge at every dog we passed, along with cars, buses, skateboards, bicycles… you get the picture. I had seen Nick almost 30 years ago with my last two dogs, and I remembered how great he’d been with them.
She’s still the same loveable Molly, full of kisses and affection, but now she knows how to heel on walks and doesn’t go bonkers every time we pass a moving object. Neighbourhood triggers are no longer an issue.

When Two Dogs Start Fighting
We have two 5 and 6 year old Pembroke Welsh Corgis who started getting into nasty fights with each other once our baby was born. Any toy or treat falling on the ground became a trigger for fights. They always had their eyes on our baby’s toys or crumbs of food around her high chair. We became really worried that they would either snap at her one day or start fighting with her in the middle. We had to take action to keep our child safe.
We found Nick after searching for dog trainers for a while. Family K9 Dog Training had very good reviews so we decided to give it a shot. Just on our first consult with Nick he taught us so much about the behaviour and demeanour of our dogs. Ever since then our lives have improved so much. The dogs do not come near our baby when she’s eating on her high chair, they do not interfere when we have guests over, they leave our baby’s toys alone and heel very well during walks. There have been absolutely no fights between them. In fact, they have started playing with each other and submitting to each other, something we had not seen in a year.
Nick helped us understand our dogs so well. Something we would never have known to do if we hadn’t met him. It’s almost as if he taught us a new language. He gave us some great obedience tools to manage them very well. This combined with consistency has improved the quality of our lives to a great extent. His method has not only helped us manage the specific problem we went to him for, it has made our dogs generally more obedient, affectionate and manageable.

When Hope Was Running Out

Decades. Dogs.
Leslie, Peter and the Dobergang – 5 dogs over 2 decades Boston to Mtl for training
I originally trained 2 Dobes with Leslie in 2003 in Montreal. After Moving to Boston – she later returned with Jackson and then several years later with Lucy and Ryder.

- This outfit was a gift from Leslie when our daughter was born. I still remember it like yesterday - so thoughtful!
I’m not one who usually endorses businesses, but I am so motivated to write this and, at the same time, not sound like some kind of giddy fan.
We sent two incorrigible Dobermans to Nick and their transformation was nothing short of a miracle. It was an 11-hour round-trip drive from where we live in Boston, Massachusetts which I, initially, thought was a bit extreme on our part. Yet I discovered that we, by no means, would win any awards for traveling so far to use Nick as others have, apparently, flown in from all over the United States and the world.
The thing that shines through more than anything is Nick Zevgolis’s over-riding love for dogs. I think if I, personally, worked with dogs around the clock, I would get a bit jaded and blasé about them and start to look at them as a job that I had to get through. But Nick, remarkably, remains enamored of each new one as he seems to delight in their individual personalities, quirks, and idiosyncrasies and appears to look at each dog as a challenge to win over and make that dog’s life that much better.
So the irony is that Nick seems to be, simultaneously, a no-nonsense firm instructor with a tough self-confidence that will not be out-willed by a dog … while also being the most affectionate dog-lover. Ultimately, this forceful taskmaster is successful partially because the dogs just love him. The other piece seems to be (and I know the phrase “dog whisperer” tends to be popularly bandied about too much lately) that he does uncannily get into their heads and intuitively “get” them.
Nick is also just a pleasure to work with. We were in the area for several days when our dogs’ training came to an end and he insisted we work with him and the dogs together even though they had already been trained. He was available to us almost around the clock and, even though it was a weekend, made it clear that he would stay with us from the crack of dawn until very late at night helping us work with our dogs if we wanted to. None of this was an extra charge. It wasn’t just a financial generosity, but, more importantly, a generosity of spirit. I have the definite impression that, when it comes to Nick, the money part of things is almost a secondary afterthought. I truly worry about this guy who seems like, if he could afford to, he would give away all his time to making happier the lives of his beloved dogs. But all this nice guy, dog-loving aspect that I write about wouldn’t count if what he does did not work. Nick Zevgolis owner of Family K9 Dog Training is the singular most effective results-oriented dog trainer bar none.

Veterinarian Referred Family K9 Dog Training after a Dog Bite
Family K9 Dog Training literally saved my German Shepherd’s life. He was a rescue with no background information who became increasingly protective and aggressive towards strangers, with everyone but me considered a stranger! Forever My Dog Trainer
I have known Nick for about 5 years now and in that time, he has trained my 3 dogs and my family dog. Needless to say, I trust him wholeheartedly with dogs and I recommend him to everyone looking for a dog trainer.
In 2019, I brought him my 1year old Frenchie and 5 year old German shepherd family dog. Neither of the dogs had any discipline, it was super hard to walk them, they had zero recall, the GSD loved to bark and runaway. Good dogs, just not easy to incorporate into our everyday lives. The GSD had been previously trained but it just didn’t stick. The Frenchie had an excessive amount of energy and he didn’t know where to direct it. The 2 went to the “Board and Train” and it was the best decision we had ever made. Both dogs came back fully trained and ready to work. Nick supported us through the transition and we ended up with amazing pets!
In 2022, I adopted a 5yr old chihuahua who came from an abused home. He was terrified and extremely towards dogs (except the ones in the house). He would lunge to kill, he didn’t care how much bigger the other dog was. He didn’t even know his name. I sent him to the program, and now he can heel, come, place, leave it and most importantly, he knows his name! I’ll attach a video of him leaving a dog alone.
The most recent one, she came back last week from training. She is a 8 month old cocker that has very low confidence and very high energy. We wanted her to speak the same language as my other 2 dogs as she was getting hard to manage. Now, everyone is on the same page, we go for pack walks comfortably, I can put everyone in a place, I can tell them to leave it and know that they will. My cocker looks to me when she’s scared instead of reacting.
The dogs are all more relaxed because they trust that I will guide them, and that is thanks to Nick’s training. I have given him 4 dogs with completely different personalities and the results have all been amazing. He tailors his training to the dog and makes sure to give the human the right tools to follow through.

25 Years of Working Together
What can I say that’s not been written before? I’ve been getting my dogs trained by Nick for almost 25 years now. We started with my first Corso, Bruce, in 2003, and this week, he trained my new Corso puppy, Thor; between Bruce and Thor and my sister and I, we’ve had ten dogs trained by Nick, and this time around, someone tried to convince me to see what else is out there. Well, I went back to Nick, and no one came close to the connection Nick developed with my dogs. On top of that, Nick doesn’t over-promise and under-deliver. He under-promises and over-delivers.
If everyone in the world cared as much as Nick about his customer service and the dogs he trained, he would keep in touch and check up. What more can you ask for? Nick, again, thanks for the great work and all the love and passion for what you do. It makes working with you a breeze, and Thor isn’t ripping my arm out of my shoulder when I walk him. A Bernese Mountain Dog to a Dachshund 12 Years Later
I have now known Nick for over a decade. He trained my first dog, a big Bernese Mountain Dog, in 2014 and just recently trained my new puppy, a little miniature dachshund. Both dogs loved Nick and developed such amazing connections with him. They came back from their training with new found confidence, maturity, and training so that they can enjoy their lives. Nick goes out of his way to keep you updated during the training and to follow up with you post-training. We have basically been having an ongoing conversation for a decade about the dogs. We brought our Goldendoodle home 12 years ago with no idea how challenging the puppy stage can be. Nick came highly recommended and so we reached out and he was amazing! One Dog. Then Another. And Another. Four.
Incredible! This was the fourth time I have worked with Nick. This last time was to train my 140 lb Anatolian Sheppard who had become aggressive with other dogs over the past two years. I should have nipped his aggression in the bud right away but I kept on deluding myself to believe that I could control this and make it right myself. It had gotten to the point where I felt I might have no choice but to put him down and I was dreading every walk with him because I was so afraid he would attack a dog again and hurt both the dog and myself.
I am so glad I called Nick for help. He was incredible! Within three sessions Grover was already on his way to responding to the training. Nick is the consummate professional. He is a pleasure to work with. Always pleasant, very patient not only with the dog but with the owner and a fountain of useful knowledge about dogs and how their minds work. He is also very affectionate with the dog he is training. Grover was happy to see him everyday! On Friday he asked me to shadow him and Grover so I could see the new behaviour before he did the transfer session with me and I was bowled over. If you didn’t know you would never guess that Grover has an aggression problem. Yesterday was the transfer lesson and I couldn’t believe that I also could work with Grover, that he would respond to my commands and that I was back in control again. Stress Disappears When You Know Your Dog Listens
Nick, nearly 10 years after you trained Angel, you’ve now been working with the newest member of our family, Artemis, and I wanted to let you know just how thrilled we are with her progress. Veterinarian Referred Family K9 Dog Training after a Dog Bite
Nick is an amazing trainer, and we’re so thankful for everything he’s done for Dash. This is the 3rd dog we’ve trained with Nick, so we already knew how great he is, but every experience with him just confirms it.
Dash is a rescue who had a rough start in life. He’s confident, goofy, and full of personality but also incredibly stubborn and in serious need of structure. That’s where Nick came in.
After completing Nick’s 3 week in-kennel training program, Dash is still the same happy, playful pup we love, but now he listens, walks well on leash, and responds so much better when we give him direction. The difference is amazing, and it makes life easier for both Dash and the whole family which includes 2 other dogs!

12 years apart - Very Different Dogs - Same Positive Outcome
Nick has trained two of my dogs, approximately 12 years apart, with different backgrounds and needs. First dog, a boisterous pure bred chocolate lab, received as a puppy chosen from a reputable breeder needed some manners. He loved everyone and his eagerness to show it, jumping, lunging and licking could be problematic. After Nick’s training he was the perfect family pet.
Second dog, a 4 year old lab/pointer mix from a reputable rescue needed confidence. Hershey was reactive to new situations, people, noises not aggressively but scared. Nick assessed Hershey in March 2026 and we completed his in home intensive training by the end of the month. You can see videos of Hershey’s training on the Facebook page around April 2026.
Four months later I’m happy to share that Hershey and I are living our best lives. He struts around the neighbourhood with confidence and I swear he smiles at the people we meet. The photo I have included is him patiently waiting for my coffee order in our local coffee shop. As you can see he is relaxed, happy and waiting for the next direction.

Training Is An Investment - Not A Cost
There are many dog trainers out there but those like Nick and Family K9 are quite rare. We chose Family K9 almost 10 years ago for our first Cane Corse Zoe and she remained the reference to everyone that met her of an incredibly behaved dog. After we lost her in June we contemplated whether we ever embark on this journey again with another dog. What we knew without any doubt was that any other dog would have to be trained by Family K9 as we would rather sacrifice getting another dog before getting one that wasn’t trained by them.
I’m am glad to say that we’ve decided to go forward with another Cane Corso and Kira has been the blessing we needed. We picked her up yesterday after what felt like the longest three weeks of our lives and the results are spectacular. After 2 previous trainers, it took only 4 sessions with Nick to help show me this marvellous dog I had by my side. He’s still that perfect well behaved pooch today! Now that my dog is part of a pack, we’ve added 2 more dogs to our family. Nick was right there when I needed him again to guide me through these new experiences with one of the new dogs. Two Years Of Trying; Trainers, Medication and Books
Our dog Goose (havanese/poodle) has struggled with separation anxiety since he was a puppy. He’s incredibly smart, well behaved, loveable, and takes well to every other kind of training we have done. However, despite exhaustive efforts to address his fear of being alone, we were just not making real progress. We consulted veterinary behaviourists, certified separation anxiety trainers, read and implemented desensitization techniques from books such as Be Right Back, tried medications and dietary adjustments, and essentially committed to never leaving him past his threshold as this is what a good deal of the literature suggested. Over this period of time we had to coordinate someone being home, hired dog sitters, or had friends/family come to watch him when we had to depart. We worked at this for over two years, hours and hours of training sessions, confident that we would make it over the barriers and that regressions would be temporary. It just didn’t happen no matter how hard we tried. After thorough research we decided to hire Nick for a 3-week training program, and all I can say is that I wish we had done it much sooner.
Nick really went over and above with us. From the start, his consultation was very informative, he was up front and transparent about everything, and just so honest in his desire to actually help us all overcome the challenge. This was something that felt lacking from anyone else we worked with. He has a deep understanding of how dogs perceive the world and how to communicate with them. He always kept in good contact with us and has continued in his commitment to help when we need some clarification or advice going forward. Ultimately, he was able to help Goose build more confidence, resilience, and the ability to self-soothe when he’s on his own. He was also able to show us how we needed to adapt our own approach to support this, which was hard, but we are not afraid of a challenge. We have continued the training since the program finished and we’re now able to leave Goose on his own for hours. He is able to settle down and remain calm by himself while we are away, and this has really given us our lives back. The training isn’t any more or less difficult than before, but it is a different strategy than and we needed a professional of Nick’s calibre to be able to navigate it confidently.
Overall, we’re incredibly happy that we found Nick and that he was able to help us all out! He is a great trainer and person altogether. Highly recommend him!

Condo Life with Separation Anxiety Noise Complaints
As soon as I’d leave him home alone in the crate, he would bark continuously without breaks. This was a major problem as I live in a condo and have gotten a noise complaint. The Franky Challenge - Lots of Trainers and Money - No Success
Best decision ever made was choosing Nick . We are first time dog owners and our dog Franky (Yorkie) was never properly trained . He is now 5 yrs old . We’ve had a few trainers and spent lots of money with no results.

Nick understands dogs and he understands people who have dogs. He has a depth of knowledge about dog behaviour and is able to lock into each dog’s temperament. One size does not fit all with dogs. We learnt a lot about our dog who is of a nervous and reactive temperament. How dog interprets the world and reacts accordingly. We also learned about how our own behaviours helped or hindered the dog. It is worth listening closely to Nick and his examples – there is a wealth of tips and information there. We saw a marked improvement with our dog. I have only 1 regret: That we wasted our time with other trainers, and didn’t find Nick sooner. We love our dog. He has incredible patience – both with the dog and with our endless questions!
He taught us how to make sure our dog was a polite member of the household (no bite, down and crate training). But the most valuable lesson he gave us was how to enjoy her and let her be a puppy, how to play with her on her level (and not be manipulated) as well as to understand that there is time in the future to train the ABCs and now is the time to get to know her and enjoy her “puppy time”.

As a first time dog owners, we discussed and agreed that we would include a dog trainer. The More You Know
Educating the Human Component in the Human/Canine Relationship
I sent my 9-month-old miniature poodle to Family K9’s 3-week boarding and training program last month and I am excited to share that my experience with this program has been fantastic. Roo is my first dog, and I did my homework before bringing her home by reading books on positive reinforcement, by researching online on best practices for training a puppy and watching endless YouTube videos from highly acclaimed dog trainers. All this research prepared me, but also made me realize how conflicting the information I found was. Some methods worked well with my puppy while others did not. I was not getting consistent results and was struggling on how to best communicate with her. Prior to coming to Family K9, I enlisted the help of another trainer, but her methods did not work well for us as once again we were not getting consistent results. At Family K9, the approach to training a dog is entirely different because the instructions provided to us were tailored to Roo. There are valuable insights that I’ve learned about Roo’s behavior that I could have never learned from reading a book or interacting with the previous trainer. These subtle pieces of information about Roo’s behavior have allowed me to understand her better and in turn helped me become a better owner. My only regret is that I did not find Family K9 sooner. The program would have provided me with a solid foundation on how to handle my dog and would have avoided the headache of switching from one method to the next and confusing my puppy despite my desire to be consistent with her. Beyond the level of training provided, Nick also did a great job of keeping me updated on my dog’s progress and staying on top of the medication administration schedule I had for Roo (which meant a lot to me given that they also manage other dogs). It’s clear to me that Family K9 offers the highest level of service to your dog. I would be more than happy to use their services again and highly recommend them.

We purchased lab retriever puppy in January of this year. Her name is Daisy. She is a sweet loving dog however very reactive and very difficult to train. Daisy would not come when called, attacked my elderly cat, jumped on visitors, attempted to chase cars and taking her for a walk was not pleasurable as she would drag us up the street in a frenzy. Although we understood that she was just a pup, we became very frustrated. Four weeks ago we scheduled an appointment with Nick, at Family K9 Dog Training, it was the best decision we made. In three short weeks working with Nick, Daisy is now a very well behaved young dog. The amazing part of this whole adventure is that we as owners have been educated as well as Daisy. Nick is very professional, knowledgeable and patient while providing the needed education to both the dog and owner. When correcting us in our technique in training, it was delivered most respectfully and always included was an example and rational of the reasoning. Daisy graduated this past Wednesday and we are so proud of her and can actually see how content she is when she follows directions and will look up at us to demonstrate how proud she is as well.

Earlier this year I brought in my 12-month male corgi (Freddie) to complete the 3-week training program. Freddie started having aggressivity issues when he was about 9 months old and trying to deal with the problem on my own wasn’t working. He was resource guarding and also attacking family members for no reason (or so it seemed to me). I was having issues with putting him in his enclosure, putting on a leash or a harness or bathing him (one by one he started to refuse to do things he was doing before).
I heard about Nick’s training from a friend a decided to try it. By all accounts Freddie’s training wasn’t easy as his behavior is part of his personality. However, Nick had a great success to figuring out his personality and triggers and getting him to do things like put a muzzle on and follow commands. Nick gave me a lot of useful tips on how to manage Freddie’s behavior and get him to do what I need him to do. I follow the guidance provided by Nick (continuous process) and now I can close Freddie in his enclosure, put on a harness and muzzle without an issue and get him to leave food he finds on the street among other great results. I continue to do quick trainings with Freddie on a daily basis to ensure we maintain the progress. Nick is very responsive and it shows that he really cares for the dogs that he works with.
The 3 weeks program is definitely worth it. I only wish I did it sooner, it would’ve saved me a lot of stress when I was trying to deal with Freddie’s aggressive behavior on my own.Tania Petrova
Magnificent Miss Jackie! 9 months old!
We cannot thank Nick enough for helping us with Jackie. Our previous private training had failed us and we were on the verge of the frightening thought that we would need to re home her. Jackie is our 3rd Golden Labrador and we just assumed this would be another slam dunk.
Jackie was different in many ways-sweet and loving but a complete “cyclone”and should have been matched with a Tri-athlete. She was very reactive to people and other dogs- a walk was not possible (if you could even get a leash on her)
After meeting Nick he agreed to work with Jackie for the 3 week Board and Train program.Nick gave us weekly updates on her progress and then called us in for a special two hour private session week 2.

After All These Years
After more than 30 years, I still feel very fortunate to do this work. Even when I’m only part of a family’s life for a short time, they let me into their world — their home, their challenges, their hopes, and their relationship with their dog. That trust has always meant a great deal to me.
Sometimes I hear from people years later, after their dog has passed away. They write to tell me that the training allowed them to fully enjoy their years together, to understand their dog and their relationship in a way they might not have otherwise. And sometimes they tell me that what they learned was the reason they were able to keep their dog when things had become very difficult.
Those are the messages that stay with me. They remind me that the work we do together can mean much more than what happens during the time we’re actually training. I may only be part of someone’s life for a little while, but being trusted with that part of it is something I never take for granted.
